Michael “Skyboek” Reichenecker is an Aircraft Interior Architect and head of Design at Berlin's MOVATION EEIG studio. With more than a decade of experience, he is considered a thought leader in the VVIP space.
Mr. Reichenecker brings a 'freshness' to VVIP design, not often seen. As we sat down, it quickly became evident why.

Of all the attributes a person can be born into, Creativity (in my humble opinion), bestows the greatest fortune. Be it music, painting, sculpture, acting, writing or design,  it carries with it a satisfaction that little else in life can compare to. It changes the way you see the world and for those with truly exceptional talent, their work will inform entire societies and point their art-form in new directions.  Last week, I had the pleasure to sit down (virtually of course) with one of Europe's hottest aviation interior architects, Michael Reichenecker.  As with many rising stars, Michael recently made the inevitable jump from a staff designer at one of Europe's largest completion centers, to owning-directing his own studio. Based in Berlin, the new firm MOVATION EEIG  offers interior architecture and design solutions for a range of travel related assets, at the top of which is aircraft - including turnkey design, design-management and consulting. On first reviewing Reichenecker's work, one thing immediately stood out for me. The environs he creates are both "fresh "(a departure from the norms) and "uniquely livable"; often a hard balance to strike.

Below is how our interview went and the compelling commentary he shared with me.

RR: Michael, your work of the last 10 years as an Aircraft Interior Architect at Lufthansa Technik has repeatedly been presented and showcased around the world. Last year you left LHT and started your own firm Movation EEIG. What's the story there?

MR: Working as an Architect with a global market leading completion center has proven to be an incredible experience and opportunity to understand the challenges that come with developing Aircraft Interior Architecture for VIP Customers. I am happy that I could contribute to how LHT’s design capabilities are better recognized throughout the industry and also have been able to come up with technical inventions, such as a new lighting system which has recently been filed for patenting by LHT. However, working in my own firm allows me to focus even more on innovative design, which is what I’m best at. At the same time our clients benefit from my completion center experience.

 

RR: What’s the benefit?

MR: In short, the goal is a shorter completion downtime, while offering a cheaper and higher quality cabin.

Being able to create certifiable cabin interiors without having to go back and forth with engineering too much speeds things up in itself. While the development of the interior architecture of the cabin per se will take as long as necessary until all client requirements have been satisfied, thanks to my experience the transition of the design to engineering and ultimately to a completed cabin will be much faster and thus cut downtime tremendously.

On top of that and concluding the design phase, Movation offers a design package that can be tendered out to suitable completion centers of the client’s choosing. With a solid certifiable cabin design package at hand, clients’ chances to receive more favorable quotes for their aircraft completion will increase.

As far as I know, we are the only design firm in the aviation industry offering that advantage.

And lastly, due to my background and coming from generations of carpenters, our design already includes suggestions on how it can be built in terms of construction. We take out the guesswork for completion centers, which again caters to speed and build quality and of course cost.

 

 

RR: It seems your designs have repeatedly been picked up by other designers. Why so?

MR: I have been called one of the most innovative designers in the industry. The fact that my work is quoted all over the place seems to prove that.

2014 I presented the first light weight concept for a BBJ “Long Range Traveler” which allows to cover long distances with fewer stops for refueling. Boeing included this concept in their 2017 publication “20 Years of Boeing Business Jets” under the header “The Future of Aviation”.

2016 I developed the A350 “Welcome Home” Interior concept for LHT, emphasizing layout and design choices promoting privacy, health and wellbeing in an aircraft. At the time I was called crazy, as health and wellbeing were not seen as related to aviation, but in the mean-time everybody in the industry understands the relevance of these factors. Constructive innovations for window shading, implementation of large screens, cooking devices and design and material innovations have since then that I introduced have become common elements in the industry.

 

RR: Health and Wellbeing is on everyone's mind these days. How does that work in cabin design?

MR: Before I start a design I always to try to understand as much as possible about the clients’ ideas and requirements. In the case of the “Welcome Home” concept, the design was rooted in an in- depth survey of VIP customers profiles and target group differentiation.

One of the key objectives is to arrive more relaxed at your destination then when you started off. I made this possible by introducing areas with higher humidity, added a SPA with massage area and steam shower, ergonomic lighting and fresh food preparation facilities. These and more elements together cater to a more favorable environment, which makes us humans simply feel better and more relaxed. The layout allows for wide and brightly lit “family areas” that can easily be separated into smaller and more reclusive private spaces via sliding dividers. Inventing a smart layout addresses clients’ often changing and sometimes contradicting needs such as for business, guest entertainment and family or private relaxation and allows the aircraft to be used in a flexible way.

RR: What are the key elements of your design?

 

MR: Since the space in an aircraft is fixed, the first step is to find an intelligent layout that mirrors the client’s functional requirements. In general, I avoid tight hallways or any stuffiness and rather try to find ways to create the feeling of open space. Even a very functional layout can be greatly enhanced with interesting lines of sight and a smart placement of monuments.

We integrate newest technology such as large screens or specific lighting if required but I advise against emphasizing these elements as design features, otherwise they can get old fast. What never gets old are natural materials, their haptics and surfaces and a welcoming environment that respects owner and guests.

RR: Where is the VIP market heading? 

MR: Even before COVID, I think changes in requirements for VIP Aircraft were already under way. Younger clients entering the market show a demand for elements that cater to sustainability and health over representation.

There will always be Heads of States projects where design requirements are directed by certain protocol, while new clients demographics may have different priorities- interior design concepts will have to represent that.

 

RR: How is COVID-19 influencing the interior design of aircraft?

MR: As a result of the pandemic, clients will be looking for cabins that can be easily be cleaned and decontaminated in a safe way with replicable and reliable results. The design will have to follow this requirement and that will have an effect on the layout, the type of materials, the type of ornaments used, if any at all, everything will be assessed in regard to how easy it is to clean. Automated and thus independent disinfection systems that eliminate all germs in air and on surfaces after flight will be a boon. That would not only mitigate the human factor but also help to keep cleaning personnel safe. While I’m sure the recent virus will be defeated at some point, awareness for the necessity to stay protected will remain.

 

RR: How can that be addressed?

MR: In the last months Movation developed an automated UVC LED based cabin decontamination system „TRIPLE9“named for its 99.9% efficacy on pathogens which can be installed preferably in green aircraft, but also retrofitted.

Our proprietary UVC LED lamps will be installed in a customized way, so that all areas can be affected by the UVC radiation. The system can of course only be operated on the ground since no humans are allowed while UVC lamps are active. Tests have shown that surfaces and air can be decontaminated within a reasonable time of rd. 2 hours.

 

RR: What about the cost of such a system?

MR: Since the lining has to be removed for installation it would be ideal to combine that with a due D- check, when everything in the cabin has to come down and go out for inspection reasons anyway.

Should the owner plan a refurbishment going with the D check, then implementing TRIPLE9 will not contribute to cost for design or downtime in any significant manner. As a result, the owner will receive a fully automated disinfection system that keeps his cabin clean and safe and also allows for chartering the aircraft out while retaining peace of mind.
