Integrated Lighting / A Bedside Glow of Luxury
I believe that subtle touches of light will bring life to
your aircraft interior.
This rendering shows a bedside table (Master be-
droom) with backlit Carrara Oro marble top I designed
for one of my clients aboard a B747. The light will de-
finetely magnify the natural beauty of the marble and
add aesthetical value to the whole area.
Put on a dimmer, it will offer a very soft, intimate and
unique cool or warm atmosphere to the room following
your mood. A glow of refined luxury.

Writing a check for a new private, custom outfitted Boeing or Airbus is about as cool as it gets in the world of purchases. But trust me, it's the easy part. Everything that comes after that falls into two very distinct categories: Onerous or Easy. Who in their right mind would choose the former? You'd be surprised how many actually do. They don't do it purposefully of course but many simply don't understand the pitfalls - and therefore the value of an 'independent' third party completion specialist. In this installment of Airborne Café, listen to Thomas Chatfield explain why there has been so much historical regret in large VVIP completions - and why, in today's world, there's simply no need for it.

Elevating Private Aviation Interiors with her killer combo: Aesthetic Talent & Seasoned Technical Experience.
In the rarefied world of private aviation, where luxury meets engineering precision, LA-based designer Sarah Mespelt Larranaga has carved out a reputation as one of the industry's most accomplished interior and exterior specialists. With over 100 aircraft completions under her belt from prestigious OEMs including Gulfstream Aerospace, Falcon Jet, Bombardier, Boeing, and Airbus, Larranaga has become the go-to expert for discerning aviation clients seeking unparalleled customization.

Our COVER Story
Private aviation has evolved from a simple means of transportation into the ultimate expression of luxury, productivity, and personalized service. Today's discerning jet owners aren't just looking for a way to get from point A to point B—they're seeking a transformative experience that begins the moment they step aboard and continues seamlessly throughout their journey. Understanding what drives these expectations reveals fascinating insights into the intersection of technology, comfort, and human psychology at 51,000 feet. The modern private jet cabin has become a sanctuary that reflects the owner's lifestyle, values, and aspirations. Owners have moved toward creating spaces that are truly their own, personalizations far beyond aesthetic choices, encompassing everything from the cabin's functional layout to the smallest details of service delivery.
The luxury cabin amenities market has quite a few players - all very good at what they do, yet in todays' world it's hard to find an old school independent that offers one-on-one personalized service to each of its customers. Rozanna Gonzalez and her company, The Rosanna Lee Group represent the classic definition of a boutique firm. Run entirely by a staff of three, Ms Gonzalez and her team generally work with only one or two clients at once. It's the way she likes it and it's the way her stable of repeat clients likle it.
"Having a close personal working collaboration with my clients is the only way I've ever worked," says Ms Gonzalez "and I can't imagine doing it any other way". We sat down with Ms Gonzalez and discovere
“When DELOS entered the private aviation market, we discovered a complex landscape," recalls Leah Phillips. "It was challenging discerning what our design, fiber, pattern, and lead time options were, so we set out to create a comprehensive program that was easily understood…and I think that we're gaining altitude."
Their solution? A business model that breaks conventional industry constraints. Delos doesn't require roll orders, can tuft from templates, operates without pattern repeat limitations, and offers customizable pile heights.
Today, DELOS has a brand spanking new state-of-the-art design center, and they're poised to serve the aviation market in a host of new. ways. Read the full article here!

As I walked the halls of yet another business aviation trade show last year (I won't say which), I couldn't help but notice the smaller halls and the shrinking attendance that have become increasingly common at what were once must-attend industry events. The landscape of aviation trade shows is shifting dramatically, and I think it's in all our best interests to acknowledge this transformation honestly.
Traditional heavyweights like some of the longstanding European exhibitions are experiencing declining attendance and exhibitor participation. Companies that once viewed these shows as essential marketing investments are now questioning their ROI as foot traffic dwindles and lead quality diminishes. The cookie-cutter approach of massive convention centers filled with static displays simply isn't resonating with today's aviation professionals who crave more targeted, meaningful interactions.
Meanwhile, a new generation of events is capturing the industry's attention by focusing on innovation and genuine networking opportunities rather than sheer size. These emerging shows prioritize quality over quantity, often featuring curated experiences, technology demonstrations, and intimate roundtable discussions that actually drive business forward. Regional events are gaining traction too, offering more accessible venues and lower costs while maintaining high engagement levels.
The pandemic accelerated changes that were already brewing. Virtual components became standard, hybrid formats emerged, and attendees grew more selective about which events deserved their limited travel budgets and precious time. Smart show organizers adapted by creating more interactive experiences, incorporating sustainability themes, and addressing hot-button industry issues like workforce development and electrification.
What's particularly interesting is how specialized shows focusing on specific segments—urban air mobility, sustainable aviation fuels, or MRO technology—are drawing passionate audiences despite their smaller scale. These events succeed because they deliver concentrated value to specific communities rather than trying to be everything to everyone.
The future belongs to trade shows that understand their audience's evolving needs. Size alone no longer guarantees success. Relevance, innovation, and genuine value creation do. As an industry, we need to support events that push boundaries and challenge conventional thinking while letting outdated formats gracefully evolve or fade away.

Owner / Operators and Flight Departments, Welcome Aboard.

Five years ago when we launched Freshbook Magazine, it had one purpose: to pull together the entire global community of interior related companies - Cabin Suppliers, Completion Centers and Design Studios. In fact we're only one of two magazines in the world that focuses entirely on jet cabin interiors - and we're the sole such all digital publication.
But today, we're extremely proud to announce a NEW permanent segment to our magazine. Up until little more than a year ago, 100% of our subscribers and social media followers were 'companies' in one of the three categories above. Today, however, Owner / Operators & Flight Departments account for almost 9% of our subscriber base - and it's growing. It's been a very organic trend and without solicitation. Yet, as you might imagine, we're very happy about this new top-tier subset of Freshbook subscribers, a group whose newfound attention adds obvious value to the advertisers and readers we serve!
Check out our exclusive, entirely dedicated page for this new very special audience!

With 19 years of experience spanning design, engineering, project management, and maintenance oversight, I have developed a philosophy that prioritizes both form and function. A good design is to quality, what managing a schedule is to budget. With every project I strive to exceed clients' expectations by limiting downtime, maintaining the budget, perfecting quality, and mastering design."
- Sarah Mespelt Larranaga
A Journey Rooted in Excellence
Larranaga's path into aviation design began at Gulfstream Aerospace, where she worked shortly after completing her Interior Design degree, later transitioning to Jet Aviation to work on Bombardier products. In 2010, she took the entrepreneurial leap to represent private aviation clients directly, offering comprehensive interior and exterior design services along with project oversight for both refurbishments and green completions.
"By trade, I'm an aviation designer and structures engineer paired with over 16 years of project management," Larranaga explains. Currently overseeing the completion of 102 and 103 aircraft while pursuing her A&P License, she brings a unique combination of creative vision and technical expertise to every project.
The Art of Aviation Design
For Larranaga, successful aviation design goes far beyond aesthetics. "In private aviation, luxury refinement merges aesthetics, mechanics, and user experience," she notes. Her approach centers on thoughtful innovation, incorporating cutting-edge avionics upgrades, quality building standards, and carefully selected materials to ensure clients maximize their time in the air.
With 19 years of experience spanning aviation design, engineering, project management, and maintenance oversight, Larranaga has developed a philosophy that prioritizes both form and function. "A good design is to quality, what managing a schedule is to budget," she reflects. "We strive to exceed clients' expectations by limiting downtime, maintaining a budget, perfecting quality, and mastering design."
Innovation Meets Value
When overseeing completions or refurbishments, Larranaga's team focuses not just on immediate needs but on future-proofing aircraft investments. "When we're overseeing a new completion or refurbishment or maintenance event, we're focusing on quality control, maintaining the schedule, maintaining the budget – but also, how we can be innovative," she says.
"How can we take new products from 2025 and bring them into this refurbishment? Is it a new CMS, Starlink, AI enhanced flight decision support, touchscreen displays, Synthetic Vision, or are we reconfiguring to add more passengers? We really just want to bring value to our client and value to their product."

Fierce Elegance at any Altitude

Despite her extensive experience, Larranaga still finds profound satisfaction in the moment clients first see their completed aircraft. "My favorite part of the project is when we've already done all the heavy lifting. We've done all the design, all the renderings, and we've gone through the build. But seeing what the client initially selected and what I envisioned, come to life on delivery day? Spectacular!"
She describes the emotional impact of those moments like this: "No matter how many aircraft they've had, their eyes light up! They're so excited. They step into the galley, look down the cabin, and, if you've done a good job, they're usually speechless. It's so fun and so rewarding."

Partnerships with Prestige
When it comes to selecting materials and finishes, Larranaga has cultivated relationships with the world's most prestigious brands. Her team frequently partners with globally renowned luxury design houses, Hermès and Poltrona standing out as a particular favorites.
"When it comes to using one of the larger design houses, I'd say hands down, our vendor 'go to' is Hermès," Larranaga explains. "They respect the quality. They respect the brand. The colors are timeless, the stitching is timeless. Their motto is: 'Our policy is quality.' You can see the attention to detail and the stitching and the quality of leather and the colors of the leather. For us, iconic quality brands like Hermès are always our go to."
Flip that Jet!
One of the more specialized services Larranaga and her team offer, is aircraft "flipping" – transforming older aircraft with dated interiors into desirable options for buyers. “It’s all about transforming the aesthetic, giving the interior a face lift – but done in a very discerning, economical way,” says Larranaga, offering the following, all too common scenario.
"Say you have an aircraft that's been on the market for a while. It has a less than desirable interior. It's not getting hits. It's not getting looks. It's getting passed over," she explains. "We come in and evaluate the aircraft. We take a fast economical approach. We're looking at spending $250,000-300,000, changing out seat covers, carpet, whatever it needs – just to change that aesthetic."
The results speak for themselves. "Next thing you know, not only are you getting a higher selling price for this aircraft, but you're getting looks again. People aren't passing it over. Buyers want to see the airplane again. Here’s a specific example,” she recalls. "We had this older Challenger 300. We had it for sale, maybe for two years. As soon as we updated the interior, the aircraft was sold within a week of the completed changes."
Creating Peace of Mind
Through her comprehensive approach to aviation design, Larranaga has positioned herself as more than just a designer – she's become a trusted advisor who helps clients navigate the complex world of aircraft customization. Her expertise spans from initial design ideation through white-glove delivery, ensuring that every aspect of the client experience meets the very highest standards.
"Design ideation through final delivery, client experience, and aircraft quality what matters most," she emphasizes, a philosophy that has guided her through over 100 successful completions. It continues to drive her work as she looks toward to bringing smiles to many more clients!
Courage.
Branding for Luxury Clients
Branding for luxury clients is about exclusivity, heritage, subtle clues going beyond just a visual aesthetic. Sarah has worked with numerous clients valuing that their brand tells a story, the brand lives as an experience, not just a logo. When working with some of the worlds most notable brands like Puma Sports, WWE Wrestling, Rolex, New Balance, Paris Hilton, Estee Lauder and The Stars these luxury brands whisper style they don’t shout. Craftsmanship, sound, touch and color palette all play an equal part.
Success in merging a brand and a private jet is creating:
-
Client experience and exclusivity
-
Storytelling
-
Bespoke layers and textures
-
Emotional and sensory experience
-
Continuous elevation of that brand in that space
-
Textures, stitching, sound and colors
-
Passenger takeaways – Does the experience leave a memory
For me branding goes beyond just a logo on a tail…it’s the full experience walking up to the exterior, climbing the steps, going on board to find your seat. Lighting, ambience to every cabin detail from champagne flutes to crew uniforms. The entire experience is a very orchestrated identity from interior materials to paint. Creating a world that reflects the clients brand and aura both in the skyand on the ground.

Rick Roseman
Article by
M I g u a l T a r t a k o f f
A
lthough the exact origin is somewhat debated, most historians believe German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe first uttered the phrase “The devil is in the details.” And if it wasn’t him, it was probably his accountant down the block trying to sift through his maze of receipts and scribbles. I think we can all agree that ‘minutiae’ in whatever bloodsuckingly detailed profession we’ve taken on, is torturous. And for that reason alone, it rightfully belongs with the devil. Interestingly, however, it was also Ludwig who coined the phrase “Less is more”…probably something he quipped to his contemporaries over a martini, later realizing that if his designs were simpler, he could avoid some of those devilish details.
All up for speculation, but as it relates to our little article here…let me assert the following: I have yet to meet even one aircraft interior designer who believes the devil was within a hundred miles of their studio while they sketched out a beautiful sideledge detail. Now, that could be that when designers design things, it’s usually someone else’s job to make them actually function, or otherwise come to fruition. But my point is…details are the sweet part for cabin designers, the chocolate shavings on a warm ganash…the artful tahini rim on a chilled margarita! It’s the stuff we live for, and it’s what we most want our clients to savor, again and again, long after the aircraft has delivered.
For this article, we reached out to twelve globally renowned designers and completion centers for some of their very sweeeeeetest cabin details. Enjoy!
Carbon-Arc / Leather Coffee Table Detail
Designed for the forward lounge of a Bombardier Global 7500, this coffee table fuses aerospace engineering with residential warmth. A single forged-carbon arc rises from the floor track and loops back to support a floating saddle-leather top, preserving valuable aisle space when guests move between divan and credenza. Weighing just 3.1 kg, the cantilever met 16-g dynamic-load and Part 25 flammability requirements while maintaining a 5 mm deflection limit.
The hand-stitched leather insert is magnetically mounted for easy in-service replacement, and optional inductive pads beneath the surface keep personal devices powered without visible hardware. The arc’s geometry recalls the aircraft’s swept wing root, binding the narrative of flight directly into the cabin.

'Claritas' Vase and Pedestal

Choosing one detail... An impossible task, as my work is essentially based on details. I seek absolute perfections, both aesthetic and technical, in the many details with which I fill a VIP cabin.
I could have shown the pop-up control console that springs out of the side of an opening armrest. Or the folding leather-covered footrest that extends the leg rest, an accessory so often badly missing in private aircraft.
I chose a vase, but not just any vase. I wanted to pay tribute to the great Finnish designer Timo Tapani Sarpaneva (1926–2006) by installing his ‘Claritas’ vase (28.5 cm high, 6 kg) in the forward corridor of an Airbus A319 CJ. To transport such a heavy and fragile object, it had to be securely glued to a removable disc and stored attached in a storage compartment during TTOL..
It is illuminated vertically by a mini museum spotlight. I think the photo speaks for itself.
Yves Pickardt
LAMINAR FLOW Table Edge / G-650
If you're into airplanes, as this client was, and myself for that matter, the term Laminar Flow is significant. It was a revolutionary turning point in the development of wing design. German aerodynamicist Ludwig Prandtl is credited with hypothesizing and proving the existence of the boundary layer, a key concept for understanding laminar flow.
But regardless of who or when, it changed the efficiency of air surfaces forever - not to mention the fact that it's SEXY - which is why myself and my client thought it needed to be brought INSIDE and celebrated on the end of his tables throughout the cabin.
Cool architectural details are always wonderful little visual morsels - but when they mimic the wing surfaces outside doing all the heavy lifting. . . .now THAT'S cool!

Richard Roseman

Challenger 350 Industrial Design
Having had a significant input into the industrial design of the Challenger 350 interior, there were two areas where we proposed developing metals rather than plastics. We had developed the DADO tops to be in metal because this area should be equivalent to Bentley and Rolls Royce quality. Real metals that sing and dance and feel real!
The supplier to Bombardier had tried hard to make resin finishers look like metal by painting them but my job was to convince them otherwise.
Bomardier was skeptical even on the day we were set to lay our finished part in front of them. I could hear the the audience draw breath when we finally unveiled it. "Wow!" said hald a dozen - but still no one in the room thought it would meet the weight requirements.
At the end of the day, the engineers took their part and ours to be weight. It was a long few minutes before they returned. Our part weight in at 20% less than the resin parts. Sweeeeet Detail.

Howard Guy
VVIP and /or Head of State aircraft (a.k.a. Bizliners) are a different animal in terms of cabin engineering. Unlike business jets, there is little to no recurring engineering in these projects. They are extremely custom meaning everything that goes into them has to be engineered from scratch - a complete clean-sheet-of-paper. And it all has to occur within a very short timeframe.

Designed by the Colour, Material and Finish team at PriestmanGoode’s Private Studio, in collaboration with the London Embroidery Studio, known for its work in the couture market, the piece was originally inspired by antique tapestry and features flora and fauna motifs, referencing both ancient styling and the natural world. The embroidery is part of a wider palette that features sustainable luxury finishes.
The application within the prestigious cabin interior supports wellness and sleep, together with intuitive technologies that are embedded for passenger comfort. This material demonstrates our expertise from big picture vision to detailed touchpoints—uniting storytelling, craftsmanship, and the ultimate passenger experience.

COMMUTER BLISS - PSU with a bit of Style
When this client first approached us, we knew he wanted something special. He owns THREE Bugattis - so that's the level of automotive fit and finish he was used to . The design brief was pretty simple. "Make it feel like a Bughatti, but you know, different." Those were his words verbatem. So we went to work turning. Our tasks: To turn pre-owned commuter service CRJ-700s into posh West Coast - all first class commuters.
Rather needless to say, it was fun and the client enjoyed the ride! He was exceedingly pleased and so were we as a design team.
Unfortunately, the project never took wings due to economics. But a still remains a Sweeeet (and satisfying) Detail for our studio

Joseph R. Burns
GAUDI TRENCADIS Inspired Sconce Lamp
This custom sconce lamp was a unique design created to give the interior a special touch reminiscent of Gaudi trencadis, with a translucent mosaic made of irregular pieces of White, Beige and Brown alabaster stone. From the initial hand sketch to the final product several iterations were necessary with Alabaster artisans to refine the design for maintenance and installation requirements, and in order to obtain a lamp that was true to the initial design intent.
The minimalist shape of the lamp combined with irregular stone details placed in a repetitive layout on the aircraft lounge truly elevated the luxury feel of the interior.

ELEVATED CRAFT in Leather Inlay
This detail reimagines traditional decorative inlays by introducing a sophisticated interplay of textures. At the centerpiece, an Italian hand-tipped leather insert in Mystique Toasted Almond, sourced from Garrett Leather, offers a tactile richness that is both refined and understated. Framing this insert, dual leather welt cords in Sierra Brandy from Garrett replace conventional plated trim, bringing softness and an unexpected elegance to the composition.
Surrounding this, stained birdseye cabinetry in a satin finish tempers the luster with warmth and depth, completing the layered effect. The result is a detail that balances rustic texture with timeless luxury - offering a fresh, bespoke interpretation of private aircraft interiors while elevating both materiality and craftsmanship.

Ms. Natalie Rodriguez

Decorative Glass Rack
TRANSLUCENT Basket-weave.
A basket weave motif was utilized throughout the cabin and carried through to the galley glass rack sliding door. This detail allows the crystal within to sparkle while introducing a distinctive texture and finish to an often overlooked area.
The panel was laser-cut with precision and plated to seamlessly match the surrounding cabin finishes, creating both cohesion and visual interest. By extending the motif into a functional feature, the design transforms a practical element into a refined focal point.

Ms. Autumn Duntz
BUNNY ON THE FLIGHT DECK
Each bespoke refurbishment undertaken by the team at International Jet Interiors is, at its core, an artful narrative told through precision and detail—and our reimagining of the iconic "Big Bunny" Global XRS is no exception.
In close collaboration with the legendary Playboy brand, we fused design acumen, heritage, and craftsmanship to create an aircraft that is both a tribute to its storied past and a statement of modern elegance. From flight deck to aft cabin, every element was conceived not merely for utility, but for its ability to elevate the in-flight experience in a way that feels both intentional and evocative.
Take, for instance, the discreetly embroidered Playboy Bunny emblem on the pilot’s armrest—a refined detail that speaks volumes in its restraint, embodying exclusivity while honoring the brand’s legacy with quiet confidence.
Yet the true luxury lies beyond the visible. Through curated textures, tactile surfaces, and luxurious materials, we embedded layers of nuance throughout the interior—transforming each space into something deeply personal, immersive, and alive with purpose. It is this deliberate balance of legacy and innovation that has captured the attention of Architectural Digest, Vogue, and other global tastemakers.

Mr. Eric Roth

Elevated Elegance In Every STITCH.
This is where the story starts — a seat, yes, but also a first impression, a place of pause before takeoff. Shot in Hong Kong, aboard Bombardier’s Global 7500 demonstrator, this detail image draws your eye to what often goes unnoticed: the contour of comfort. The leather’s quiet sheen, the stitched precision, the soft fabric that invites touch — it’s all designed for moments that matter.
Whether you are closing a deal or chasing a sunrise, it is a subtle reminder: true luxury isn’t loud. It’s designed, engineered, and effortlessly felt — even before the wheels leave the runway.

ELIPTICAL COFFEE TABLE CLUSTER
In this concept created by the Comlux Design Team and submitted to the 2025 DESIGN et al design competition, elliptical shapes at varying heights are integrated to produce a playful feast for the eyes. Headed up by Lauri Church, the Comlux design team are challenged by customer design briefs with each new aircraft But givenn the opportuniity to concept something entirely on their own with no constraints, it's easy to see their talent - especially in creating small details like this one.
Symbiotic design that remains consistent with the interior at large is always something that comes into play - but within that protocol, it's fun to get a bit whimsical and give customers often more than they were expecting.

FOUR + DECADES OF WELL-EARNED REPUTATION

Article & interview by
R i c h a r d W. R o s e m a n
I should start by saying that I met Al Caputo, TAPIS Corp's founder on a few occasions back in the day – no doubt at one or more of their legendary off-site parties at NBAA/BACE. He was a very social, very engaging man. But even in a quick chat, it was easy to discern his obsession. He was consumed with aviation textiles and even back then, I could tell he was laser-focused on heat-release fabrics and several other ‘holes’ in the marketplace that needed filling. And sure enough, it was barely two years later, Tapis Corp rolled out one of the world’s first AN61 heat release fabrics for aircraft. It changed everything and opened up an entire new world of options for designers and centers.
But that was then, and now is now. Today and for more than three decades now, Mr. Caputo’s daughter, Karen Caputo has run the company as President & CEO. Ms. Lauren Kenealy, the company's Director of Marketing was kind enough to sit down with me this week for an in-depth Q&A about TAPIS -where they were, where they areand where they're headed.

The TAPIS Leadership Team

Juliet O'Brien
Karen Caputo
Melissa Estes
Jason Estes
RR: Normally I like to kick these interviews off by asking when the company was founded, how it all came to be etc - and then ease into more current topics. However, in this case, I’d like to switch the order around, instead diving right into what’s new in 2025. So, with that, may I ask what exciting new products or significant innovations has TAPIS either rolled out recently or might we look forward to in the near term?
LK Tapis has had a big focus on sustainability, which we have been rolling out in all our products. The newest product which we’re promoting is AV Bio which is a bio-based Ultrafabrics product for commercial aviation seating. This product was shortlisted for a Crystal Cabin a few years back. The inspiration for this bio product came from Ultrafabrics Volar Bio. In 2019, Ultraleather Volar Bio was launched as the first biobased collection, marking a major step toward reducing reliance on finite resources. This innovative material is made with 29% USDA BioPreferred Program-certified content, derived from renewable resources like wood pulp and corn-derived resins. Currently, Ultraleather Volar Bio includes Susterra® propanediol, sourced from U.S. corn, which does not compete with food production. Susterra® is 100% bio-based and helps reduce the carbon footprint, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
These products can now include up to 70% renewable resources, combining Susterra® with TENCEL™ Modal fibers for even greater sustainability.
As well, we have launched an open-line 9-series collection. Our Ultraleather 9-series is a unique collection as it was developed specifically for commercial vertical surfaces. The 9-series collection meet she FAR 25.8523 standards for heat release, smoke density, and toxicity across various stackups. The stocked collection helps to minimize on MOQ and lead time. This new collection is in one of the most popular grains, Matte Vincenza, and is offered in nine stunning colors. Another unique tidbit about this collection: it has been tested and certified by NASA’s Materials and Processes Technical Information System (MAPTIS), making it the only product of its kind in the market.
RR: To carry that topic forward a bit, it seems as though TAPIS is continually pursuing new breakthroughs and refinements in both wovens and non-wovens. Do you have a dedicated area and R&D group to facilitate these new innovations?
LK: Yes, we have a great internal team for R&D and we collaborate with our partner mills greatly. Our VP of Operations and Technical Services, Kevin O’Brien, works with our mills to not only to offer new materials, but to improve on our current materials. In addition to R&D of the products, we have a great team down in Dallas who work on development for value-added (lamination, panels, etc.) and chemical developments.
RR: I know TAPIS has long been famous its Ultrasude and Grospoint lines. But I also know you now have the very popular Tapisuede. Would you mind drawing the distinction between Ultrasuede and Tapisuede – in terms of their non-woven makeup and specific usage distinctions on an aircraft?
LK: Utlrasuede and TapiSuede are very similar products. They are both non-woven faux-suede products developed in Japan, but there are some minor differences. For starters, the biggest difference is the mill. Ultrasuede is a product within the Toray International Group, whereas TapiSuede is developed at a different mill. Another difference is the knap level; Ultrasuede is a higher knap, which provides the “brushed effect,” whereas you can brush the knap and see a difference. TapiSuede does have a knap as well, but it has a less noticeable difference. Ultrasuede contains upwards of 30% plant-based material, whereas TapiSudede incorporates 100% recycled polyester into its products. Lastly, Ultrasuede is offered as a solid product, but is available in printed and laser options, including Melange and Twill. TapiSuede offers three product variances, including original, Flannel, and multi-directional stretch.
For the commercial market, both suedes offer a vertical surface compliant product.

The biggest variance between our vertical surface textiles and other textiles is the ability to meet OSU compliance more easily.

RR: Again on the subject of your material science pursuits, I noticed you now offer an extensive array of Lamination offerings. Can you please talk about that a little and perhaps give a few examples of requirements that a designer or center might have on a live project?
Lamination is a great opportunity that we have added to our offerings. We offer lamination for commercial seating products. We offer an array of options including roll-to-roll lamination for seating products, sheet lamination for vertical surface applications, adding PSA backing to fabrics, and thermoform substrates.
We have found the most interest to be in vertical surface products. We have done an array of panels for many airlines around the world, with both Ultraleather 9-Series and TapiSuede BHC-SS. It is important that all components are able to meet vertical surface testing requirements, which means OSU-compliant foam or felt with our products. The designs can vary from waves to cushioned looks and more!
RR: There seems to be a difference in your Commercial Vertical Surface Textiles and the other woven textiles you offer. Is that predominantly about the need for vertical burn certification or are there other distinctions as well?
LK:The biggest variance between our vertical surface textiles and other textiles is the ability to meet OSU compliance more easily. The VS (vertical surface) products are inherently thinner and lighter, which helps with testing as well. With the Ultraleather 9-Series product, there is a proprietary aspect that we developed with the mill to help this product pass testing on even the most difficult of stack-ups.
RR: Does TAPIS ever receive developmental requests for things that don’t exist? Or maybe a better way to ask that is, do customers ever run onto unique applications or customer requirements that are not readily available among your existing lines?
LK: A HUGE part of Tapis’ products are custom developments. I actually have the pleasure of overseeing our custom developments (Lab Dips), done for leading airlines and design firms around the world. The majority (95% approx.) of our vertical surface products are custom developments, whereas 70-80% (approx). Commercial seating is custom as well. A lot of airlines want to create a very specific look, so we receive design briefs with the color and grains they want to match. We have matched an array of items ranging from organic leather to suedes to plastics to NCS colors and more. The colors can range from the traditional blues and greys all the way to pink and neon green! Each customer has a specific design goal, and at Tapis, we strive to achieve every design goal they may have.
As well, a new custom option we have seen customers opt into is bio-based products. While do have one open line of Volar Bio, we have found customers opting to add in in bio to their seating and VS products.
RR: I would assume the commercial airline space is a broader market for TAPIS, but I also know your products are widely specified in business and VIP aircraft as well. Can you give us a rough idea of the percentage makeup across your market sectors?
LK: It is hard to put into a percentage of where we are in both markets. But We are spec’d in majority of the VIP marketing and commercial airlines we are on a large majority for VS, whereas the seating market is the least, we are still continuing to grow. We also do quite a bit of work in space.

The Joy and Satisfaction of Teamwork
Let to Right:
Kevin O'Brien
Perry Hodge (Ultrafabrics)
Ray Romano (Ultrafabrics)
Jason Estes
RR: It’s interesting to see that some of your products wound up in outer space on both Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin. Can you tell us how that came about when the two missions occurred?
LK: Yes, we are honored to be a part of such a cool and new development in this realm. Tapis also works closely with NASA and other space agencies. Our 924 product is MAPTIS approved which helps other space agencies minimize on test time and developments in that sense.
Virgin Galactic: Tapis and its long-term collaborator Ultrafabrics worked with Virgin Galactic and its appointed interior design firm Seymour Powell to provide a seating material constructed from Ultraleather Fusion Stretch. The fabric features a smooth, matte texture with extra flexibility to ensure it fits smoothly and tightly around the spaceship’s uniquely crafted and contoured seating.Virgin Galactic also chose Tapis' very own Tapisuede Flannel for Unity’s vertical wall surfaces. The high-performance non-woven fabric provides a soft and sophisticated finish, and is highly resistant to stains, fades, and wrinkles, making it the perfect choice for such a hard-working interior.
Blue Origin: Tapis and Ultrafabrics teamed up on a cabin interior featuring wall panels replete in Ultraleather Pro, finished in a ‘space chic’ White Wash tone. Durable, soft and highly stain resistant, Ultraleather Pro also offers antimicrobial protection for ultimate peace of mind. Meanwhile Blue Origin seat accents feature Ultrasuede in Charcoal, with special attention paid to ensure a luxurious and smooth texture to the touch, while a non-woven structure allows the breathability and permeability required for true passenger comfort.
RR: For almost anyone in the business, we all recognize TAPIS as a dominant force when it comes to certified interior soft goods. I’ve always been curious to know, back at the beginning, did Mr. Caputo simply recognize that there was a hole in the market – that burn certifications were driving demand and there was therefore an unexplored niche in the market. Can you please talk about that early history just a little and tell us how it unfolded?
LK: Well, Tapis has been providing high-performing aircraft interior fabrics since 1977. The whole thing originated in the VIP sector of aviation making flame-retardant custom carpets, and then developed Ultrasuede for headliners in the private jet market. Later, our founder Al Caputo, innovated one of the first AN61 heat release fabrics, which is now used by more than 50 carriers. Karen then began working with her father, Al, in 1977 while completing her degree in business education. She became extremely interested in the aviation business and decided to put aside her initial plans to teach, ultimately jumping full in to help lead Tapis. In 1985, Tapis entered the commercial aviation sector, and by 1988, Karen was officially running Tapis’ operations.
As mentioned above, Tapis Corporation was the first in the industry to develop a heat release product meeting the new (at the time) requirements for AN61 heat and smoke for vertical surfaces. Under Karen’s leadership, Tapis opened up an additional company based in Texas (BAKS) to expand the product offering and become autonomous in flame treatment.
Karen is still Tapis’ President and CEO! In addition to her amazing leadership, we have several other very strong leadership teams including: Jason Estes: VP of Global Sales and Marketing, Kevin O’Brien: VP of Operations and Technical Services, Melissa Estes: VP of Operations and Supplier Management, and Juliet O’Brien: VP of Finance and Personnel.

We will always see different design trends for different programs and developments, but some things will always stay the same as in whites, beige, and grey.

RR: Finally, I always like to ask if you are seeing trends in one direction or another. Are today’s designers and specifiers causing TAPIS to respond in new directions or colorways?
LK: As mentioned earlier, we have seen the development of colors continue to grow and the value-added attributes. We will always see different design trends for different programs and developments, but some things will always stay the same as in whites, beige, and grey in the business jet market, as they so often serve as the designer’s foundation, then receiving accent colors in pillows and accessories. In the commercial market (airlines) we tend to see more blues and greys (and sometimes red or black).
As much as interior cabins change and evolve, some things, it seems, will always stay the same!

Co-owner Leah Phillips smiles and says…”Well, it’s our Southern Hospitality of course!” But as we got into it a bit, turns out there’s a lot more going on than just mint juleps and porch swings.
There's definitely something more brewing down in Calhoun, Georgia. Oh, the southern charm’s there alright but cutting-edge aviation technology may just be getting served up in equal measure of late! Delos, the family-owned custom carpet tufter that's been making waves in the private aviation market since 2008, has just unveiled their impressive 40,000 square foot warehouse expansion— along with a brand-new customer showroom and private aviation sample library…and it’s turning heads!

DELOS co-owners, Leah and Ivan Phillips

“When Delos entered the private aviation market, we discovered a complex landscape," recalls Leah Phillips. "It was challenging discerning what our design, fiber, pattern, and lead time options were, so we set out to create a comprehensive program that was easily understood…and I think that we're gaining altitude."
Their solution? A business model that breaks conventional industry constraints. Delos doesn't require roll orders, can tuft from templates, operates without pattern repeat limitations, and offers customizable pile heights.
A Space Designed for Connection
Walking into Delos' new showroom feels like stepping into a thoughtfully curated design studio where innovation meets hospitality. The space houses an extensive sample library showcasing the company's comprehensive aviation offerings, including customer re-colored samples that dramatically expand available colorway options.
"Our goal was to provide a comfortable space for customers that exudes Delos' personality and style," explains co-owner Leah Augustine Phillips. "We invite customers to get to know us personally as American Makers, and to experience firsthand how we intentionally utilize robotics for consistency and speed, coupled with artisan hand-finishing. We feel that the best way to show Delos' capabilities is to pull back the curtain -to entertain and educate, all while providing immediate project solutions."
The showroom's inaugural guest was Samantha Boyce of West Star Aviation, marking a meaningful milestone for the Delos team. The visit showcased an environment purposefully designed to foster creativity, collaboration, comfort, and connection—complete with those signature Southern touches and hospitality that make Delos uniquely welcoming. Samantha was also treated to a Makers Tour to experience the mastery of Delos’ robotic tufting technology combined with the artisan hand-finishing completed by local craftspeople. She viewed products in various stages of the process to expand her knowledge of how their custom carpets are made, while also gaining a better understanding of Delos’ custom capabilities.
Innovation Meets Artisanship
What sets Delos apart in the aviation carpet world isn't just their Southern hospitality—it's their unique approach to manufacturing. Using robotic technology similar to embroidery techniques, they create custom carpets with remarkable consistency and speed. But here's where it gets interesting: approximately 85% of their work is still hand-finished by skilled local craftspeople, creating a perfect blend of high-tech precision and artisan quality. “We’ve spent years figuring out the right blending of techniques,” says Ms Phillips, “and now we’ve got it dialed in to meet both the quality and the often rigorous timeline demands of our aviation customers.”
This controlled single needle tufting technology gives Delos carpets depth and detail that's simply not achievable through traditional methods. For OEM manufacturers and refurbishment services, this means freedom from the constraints of pattern repeats and unnecessary seaming, opening up exciting new design
possibilities while ensuring long-term durability.
"Delos is known for unique texture combinations and yarn mixes for custom projects," notes Leah Phillips. "Our clients in the interior design community tell us they enjoy maximum creative flexibility with Delos via fiber options, colors, unlimited sizes and shapes, and the ability to turn their project fast. We make custom as easy as ordering your favorite coffee. It's a win-win."
A Fresh Perspective on Design
Adding to their creative firepower, Delos has welcomed SCAD graduate Ann Matthews as their new design manager. With an extensive career in floorcovering design and a flair for sophisticated tonal work, Matthews is already making her mark with the upcoming Verge series, set to debut at the
NBAA-BACE show in Las Vegas this October.
The Verge series celebrates those magical moments of transition and convergence—think dusk to dawn, forest edges, tide pools, desert to oasis, and even land to air. These organic designs feature converging and diverging line work, abstract topographies, threshold gridwork, and striking contrast zones that capture
the poetry of transformation.
Sustainability in the Sky
Beyond their innovative manufacturing and stunning designs, Delos is committed to environmental responsibility. Co-owner Ivan Phillips emphasizes their dedication to earth-friendly practices: "Sustainability drives our processes at Delos. We manufacture with today's newest earth-friendly fibers like PET made from recycled water bottles and ECONYL® nylon made from fishing nets, spent carpets and other nylon waste that has been collected from around the world. Wool is still a staple fiber, proving over time to be sustainable, biodegradable, and good for the air. We are committed to doing our absolute best to serve our clients and our planet. It's the best of both worlds."

Breaking Industry Conventions

“When Delos entered the private aviation market, we discovered a complex landscape," recalls Ms Phillips. "It was challenging discerning what our design, fiber, pattern, and lead time options were, so we set out to create a comprehensive program that was easily understood…and I think that we are gaining altitude."
Their solution? A business model that breaks conventional industry constraints. Delos doesn't require roll orders, can tuft from templates, operates without pattern repeat limitations, and offers customizable pile heights. They also tuft large sizes without the need for seaming, which improves wearability. These advantages, combined with their boutique yarn offerings and mixing techniques developed over nearly two decades, create unique patterns with remarkable depth.
Southern Charm,
Global Reach
While Delos operates from the charming community of Calhoun, Georgia (conveniently located off I-75 between Atlanta and Chattanooga), their reach extends far beyond the South. They're represented by Kristen Lentowicz with Luxe Interior Finishes, based in Orlando, Florida. Kristen can be reached at kristen@luxeif.com or (321) 616-5562 for virtual consultations, in-person library updates, and appointments.
For those planning to visit, Delos maintains their signature Southern hospitality approach. They welcome customers to drop by and put a face with a name, though they kindly request advance notice when meetings have specific objectives, if airport transportation is needed, or if you'd like to experience a traditional Southern BBQ lunch accompanied by tall glasses of sweet tea.
In an industry where consistency, speed, and customization are paramount, Delos has found a winning formula that combines cutting-edge technology with time-honored craftsmanship and genuine Southern warmth. It's a recipe that's helping them soar to new heights in the private aviation market.

Kristen Lentowicz
Ivan is the “big picture thinker”, running the manufacturing and financial aspects of the company. His Mechanical Engineering degree from Southern Poly paved the way to utilizing robotic tufting and his continuous focus on improving and expanding business operations.
Leah is a graduate of Wofford College with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Economy and Philosophy. She was inspired early in life by exposure to the creative arts and influenced by her family’s floor covering business, all of which contributed to her passion for design, marketing and product development.

FROM CONCEPTS TO OCEAN-GOING, TEN OF THE WORLD'S MOST STUNNING SUPERYACHT EXTERIORS
A B O V E & B E L O W
The Turning Point of Superyacht Exteriors
The very nature of an ocean-going vessel is one of beauty and simplicity. A sharp bow to cut the water and glide efficiently through an ocean. A slippery uncluttered hull to continue what the bow has started. The principal has remained the same throughout time and indeed across all manner of marine vessels. But private ocean yachts are inarguably the pinnacle of manmade marine vessels. Their very purpose is to evoke relaxation and beauty. It's been that way for 100 years of yacht-building. But what hasn't always been that way, are the people who design the exteriors. Some forty years ago and beyond, virtually all yacht exteriors were left to the naval architects that designed their hulls. For the most part (with some notable exceptions), they mostly carried a very naval, utilitarian look to them. And back in the day, that's what their owner's expected...indeed wanted. But in the last half-century all that has changed. Somewhere along the way, with the help of designers like John Bannenburg, the notion of naval architects necessarily controlling everything 'above' the waterline was challenged. While hull-form rightfully belongs to naval architects - that which sits above the water, need not.
And it's certainly true.
In this installment of YACHTSPACE, we're taking a look at ten of the most celebrated and globally recognized yacht exteriors. In amongst these iconic designs are a few "concept" designs as well, exteriors that even before their fruition, are considered award-winning and timeless designs. Enjoy!
